In this chapter i learned that the entire process of photography is subjective. And that each stage of the process is pre- visualization, visualization, and post- visualization. The goal of photography was to “illuminate the dark areas of human existence, to inform and move the viewer.” Also in photojournalism is a graphic way of telling a story. Good pictures must reveal human emotion. Then there is sports photography. Which requires keen eye, patience, stamina, good instincts, and sharp reflexes. Some things that will help you become a great photographer are:
Just to name a few.
Photography is not only the most commonly used means of visual communication today, it’s central to our experience. The five most common photographic cliches are:
Good composition is best achieved when a combination of devices or strategies are used together.
Also the very best cinema makes us experience an emotion. Composition includes everything seen on the screen:
The best work in any genre has great stopping power, is compelling, and communicates a special moment- one that is both credible and emotive.
The portfolio review was a very insightful on how and what we need to do to make a better portfolio . First we need to make the portfolio hard covered, examples of this is wood or acrylic. and it should be about 11 x 17. Next you should use a epson 1400 printer to print the pages. You should have a wide variety of work to show in your portfolio. From letter head, business cards, poster, to re branding a brand name. You need to know your work thats in the portfolio. Because they will ask you question about the work.
Along with your portfolio you should have examples of your work. From cd covers, to book covers. You also need to have a business card and a resume. The resume should be printed on thinker paper then normal computer paper. Buy the why the paper you use for your portfolio should be high quality paper. You will be spending lots of hours making the perfect portfolio. So be prepared for long hours and lots of days working on your portfolio. And this is just a few things i learned today.
What i learned in this chapter. That illustration has a long and extraordinary history, one that precedes the written word. There is nothing that makes ideas more visible and memorable than illustration, illustration is a powerful and emotive medium. Also photo-illustration plays an important role across media today and commercial art is very fitting reference fore most of today’s illustration.
As far as the most appropriate illustrator the art director often knows immediately who the best illustrator should be for the assignment.
Also graphic style is also a visual code that reflects or recalls the aesthetic sensibility that may suggest the content and feeling of a story. Also great planning, however, may give birth to incredible graphic solutions.
After the illustrator and illustration are decided upon, its the art director job to assemble the artwork and words into a cohesive and meaningful whole. Great design are nearly invisible. Info-graphics play a major role into todays magazine. Which are like tables and charts.
What i learned in this chapter is color plays a important part in design. Color can make or break a good design. When using color make sure you know the region that you are designing for so not to defend anyone by making the wrong color choice. There are many colors to choice from but they all come from four main colors. Which in computer programs the four are know as cymk.
In chapter five i learned that graphic design is an ongoing puzzle, and it is the designer,s charge to construct and assemble all the pieces appropriately for a specific audience. And that a good design attracts and holds the audience, while bad design discourages and repels the audience. And a good design has balance in it. Also design can achieve a sort of graphic equilibrium in one of two ways Symmetry which is more traditional and formal, and Asymmetry which is informal and playful in its approach to balance.
I also learned about optical center which is the spot where the human eye tends to enter a page. Also understanding our normal reading patterns will help you better plot and design your layouts, and the more important something is, the more likely it will sit high and to the left. Every design needs a focal point, something to dominate, to catch the audience’s attention and hold it. Here are few ways to do that, with selective focus, size color unusual shapes, uneven borders, ragged edges just to name a few.
There are three different layout stages: thumbnail sketches, roughs, and finished layouts.
Also in this chapter i learned some ways to make a good portfolio. One way is to use fome-cor board in replace of cardboard or posterboard for mounting. Also you should laminate your work to protect it.
Also when sending your work to the printers you should include instructions. So the printer knows what you are looking for when your work is done printing.
In this chapter i learned alot about type and when to use it and when not use to much of it. You should never use more than two or three different type of type at one time. they also stressed that margins are very important and they give the eye a place to rest and give order to the project. It is also ok to take chances with type it sometimes plays off and makes it a great design, and also sometimes its ok to use just text if the text is bold enough to get the message across. Typography affects all media and it also be if used improper type design can sabotage the message.
Also logos must run type large enough to be seen in something as small as a button. Type shapes and helps communicate the message. There is also sometimes in rear ocassion that all uppercase letter are ok to use. so it gets the audience attention.
